Initial Thoughts

Are you struggling with maintaining a mentoring partnership? Self-mentoring may be just the solution you need! What do you know about self-mentoring?

In the video presentation below, Alan McNaughton provides an overview of self-mentoring and discusses how you may implement self-mentoring in your professional life. After viewing the video you will reflect on your current professional situation and your leadership potential.

Where are you in your professional journey? Are you...

moving into a new position or work setting?

open to learning more about yourself?

ready to expand your role as a leader?

willing to stretch yourself and grow?

Time to reflect!

How do you know if you are ready for self-mentorship? Click here to complete a self-mentorship self-efficacy questionnaire. You may download and print a copy of the questionnaire form or use your notetaking sheet to record your answers. This survey is designed to gauge beliefs you have about yourself as a leader. You will read through each statement and select your response.

Take a look at your survey responses and use your notetaking sheet to answer the questions below:

  • What did the survey reveal about your confidence in your ability to lead?

  • How well did the results align with your perspective of your leadership abilities?

  • In which areas did you assign yourself lower scores?

  • What opportunities could you create to raise scores in those areas?

Organizational Framework

Now that you completed the questionnaire to begin considering areas of leadership strength and growth, in the upcoming Perspectives and Resources sections you will learn more about the self-mentoring framework including the differences between mentoring and self-mentoring, the benefits of self-mentoring, the levels of self-mentoring, and strategies for self-mentoring. This professional learning module is based on the self-mentoring organizational framework developed by Dr. Marsha L. Carr which is represented in the graphic below.
